The Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) cordially invites you to the first webinar of the five-part webinar series "Unpacking Freshwater's Role in Climate Change Mitigation" (7 February 2023, 9.30-10.30 CET). The first topic "Mitigation measures in drinking water and sanitation services" will focus on the climate change mitigation potential in the drinking water and sanitation (WASH) sector. Until mid-April 2023, other topics on the key role of water for climate change mitigation measures will also be highlighted, including energy, land use and forests, freshwater ecosystems and integrated approaches.

The content of the webinars is based on the findings of the report "The essential drop to reach Net-Zero: Unpacking Freshwater's Role in Climate Change Mitigation", which was launched in December 2022 with high-level participation at the World Climate Conference (COP27). It provides a comprehensive scientific basis on the key role of water in climate change mitigation, which still receives too little attention - both as an essential (and threatened) foundation of mitigation activities in sectors such as energy and forests, and in terms of the untapped mitigation potential in the water sector itself. Together, the report and the webinars show how cross-sectoral cooperation can prevent water risks in climate change planning in other sectors and harness mitigation potential in the water sector.  In addition, the report lists concrete approaches for measures in climate protection and water resource management.

The first webinar on the climate protection potential of drinking water and sanitation systems will take place on Tuesday, 7 February 2023 from 9.30 to 10.30 am, CET. Speakers of the first webinar include Ricard Gine from SIWI and Jacek Makinia from Gdansk University of Technology in Gdansk (Poland). Best practices from the international context will be presented by Tallulah Lutkin from Global Water Intelligence (GWI) and from the GIZ project "Sustainable Sludge Management in Jordan", presented by Nadine Ghantous and Suhaib Ababneh (GIZ Jordan). Participation is possible digitally via Zoom.

The webinar series is organised by the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) and is a joint project of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Stockholm Resilience Center (SRC) and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.
