The Greater Accra Metropolitan Area (GAMA) Sanitation and Water Project was launched to ensure access to low-cost sanitation and water facilities, particularly in lower-income communities in the metropolitan region, and to reduce the cost of a toilet from US$600 to about US$50. For more than 230,000 inhabitants, the hygiene and health situation has thus been significantly improved. Outbreaks of cholera and waterborne diseases have decreased thanks to improved environmental hygiene, household sanitation and along 282 kilometres of water pipelines. The project has made life more dignified and livable in low-income communities.
